Can positive thinking get you out of chronic back pain? (NO!)

Many people think that positive thinking can get you out of chronic back pain. But the opposite is actually true. In some cases it makes the suffering worse.

What is positive thinking?

Positive thinking is to create a positive mental attitude by affirmations on what is good, possible and desirable.
Have you been putting yellow post-its on your fridge door as well as your bathroom window? Or even any other place in the house remind you of this?

In that case you can probably relate to these positive daily affirmations, like

I’m worth it

I can do this

I deserve to be happy

I love myself with all my problems and flaws

I am confident

And that list can go on and on…

Positive thinking can help change your mood

Positive thinking can help change your mood and you might have gotten some positive energy from it. That you were in such a shitty situation that you really needed to have something positive to look at, dream about the bright side of life. How your life can be, should be.

We all need some positivity sometimes. As you’ve been in pain already for such a long time, for years, well, then the pain can really get to you and influence your mood and the way you generally feel.

So from that perspective it’s a good thing to do.

But let me ask you a question: did this positive thinking get you out of pain? It probably didn’t otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this blog!

Why positive thinking CANNOT get you out of pain

Let me explain you why this positive thinking could NEVER have gotten you out of pain.

It is really simple. If you only focus on the positive, you push away the negative.

A life without a negative side is impossible. Life happens and everybody gets their portion of ‘shit’ on their way. Look at a battery: it has a positive and negative side as well.

Life happens, shit happens

As has been discovered already years ago by Dr John E Sarno, is that repressed emotions are often the cause of back pain. That can be any negative emotion, but he discovered that it is especially anger and rage that are being repressed. We all have stress and tension in today’s society as well as the pressures we put on ourselves. All this causes loads of negative emotions. Everything that is uncomfortable we tend to push away. This is normal human behaviour.

Stress and back pain

Now imagine you’re somebody that is already repressing emotions due to stress and tensions and if on top of that you’re only focussing on positive emotions. What will happen you think?

Well, you push away the negative emotions even further away from yourself.

So, you actually make it worse!

The good news today is that you can reverse this process of repressed emotions. So you get in balance again, like the battery. When you get back in balance with your emotions your pain will be gone.

I’m Esther Drost and have suffered 6 years of chronic pain in my back, leg, knee, shoulder and under my foot. The pain started in the back and it shifted to another spot after a while. What I learned is that it all had the same cause.

I’ve tried over 35 methods to find pain relief. My solution was the online Zero Pain Now program, in which I became a Master Coach after becoming pain free. Ready to help others in pain.
